Jill Scott is the only child of mother Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 4th of April, 1972. She was raised by her grandmother and mother. She is an only-child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she entered Temple University. In Temple, Scott held two jobs as she was studying secondary education. She hoped to become an high school English teacher. It was impossible to realize this dream when, after studying for three years while working as a teacher assistant in college, she decided to leave. Following her first gigs doing live poetry shows and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. Through the Roots show, she revealed herself as an artist. In the following years, she managed to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In the Canada tour of The Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable experience performing. She was also the first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
